Stanford University: Maps and Records

Facility Identifiers Maps and Records Home

Maps and Records maintains the Stanford University Facility Administration Maintenance Management System (FAMIS) Space Management database (FSM), the Facility database of Record. FSM houses official facility identifiers, names, addresses and other facility information including rooms and square footages. FSM is also the back-end database application that supports iSpace, Stanford's space inventory system. iSpace is used by space coordinators campus wide to track room utilization information.

Many department organizations rely on information in iSpace/FAMIS for on-going operational needs. Maps and Records notifies appropriate personnel of Facility related changes that may affect the University's operational systems.

Please contact Dobie Howard, FAMIS/FSM/iSpace Administrator (3-3289) if you have questions about naming and numbering facilities or if you would like to be added to our distribution lists.

Building Names

Building Names require the review of the University Architect/Planning Office and Office of Development before approval by the President. Contact the University Architect/Planning Office at 723-7773. Once names are approved, Maps and Records will be notified to update the Facilities system of record. For more information, please see Admin Guide Memo 42.4

Building Alias Names

Common building name aliases are "MEM AUD" for "Memorial Auditorium", "Terman" for "TERMAN (FREDERICK E) ENGRG CENTER." Contact Swati Prabhu 3-0988 to suggest new Building name aliases for consideration in our applications including FIMS and campus-map.stanford.edu. Building Aliases allow a building to be found more easily.

Facility ID/Building Numbers (Assignments, Temporary Buildings, Construction Trailers)

A building number is assigned when the building is in construction, and stays for the life of the facility. For new Facility ID assignments, please contact Dobie Howard at 3-3289. While it is sometimes necessary to change a building's address, building IDs are not changed once assigned due to the vast amount of records associated with this identifier.

Building Addresses (Assignments, New Buildings)

Buildings are addressed by Maps and Records in coordination with the University Architect/Planning Office. Addresses are assigned by Maps and Records based on a grid established in coordination with Public Safety for the 911 system. To assign a new building address, please contact Dobie Howard at 3-3289.

MailCodes

Mailcodes are different from Zip+4 codes used by the US Post Office. Mailcodes for the University and School of Medicine can be found at http://mailcodes.stanford.edu.

For more information on Mail Services at Stanford, please see: Admin Guide Memo 81.2

Room number changes

Maps and Records must be notified of all room number changes, and all remodels that affect the space configuration (walls, doors, etc.). Contact Dobie Howard 3-3289.

Land Features (EAP's, Outdoor Structures, Grounds Regions)

Land features are maintained in GIS or CAD systems for a number of operational purposes. Officially named spaces on the Stanford University campus require the review of the University Architect/Planning Office and Office of Development before approval by the President. For more information, please contact Kristina Seyer Smith, 3-0594.

Utility Features (Sewer, Storm Drain, Electric, etc.)

Utility ID's are assigned dynamically by our CAD/GIS systems, however operational identifiers for manholes, vaults and other identifiers (manhole ID's, valve numbers, barcodes) can also be stored. If you would like to discuss adding a new identifier type or know of an existing utility feature that needs an ID, please contact Jay Marianowits at 5-0746.

Stanford University Leases (New Leases, Cancelled Leases, or Changes)

Contact Stanford Management Company, Property Services: 926-0225. See also Admin Guide Memo 14 concerning Academic and Business Relationships with 3rd Parties Please note: Lease information is not maintained by Maps and Records.
